Rhinocort Is Newest Over-the-Counter Nasal Steroid Spray

As allergy season approaches, there’s a new tool on the shelf. McNeil Consumer Healthcare has announced the launch of Rhinocort (budesonide) as the next over-the-counter nasal steroid spray. Rhinocort is used to treat allergic symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny or itchy nose, and sneezing.

Nasal steroid sprays are considered the gold standard for allergic symptoms affecting the nose. They are more effective than nasal decongestants (like Afrin) at fighting the body’s allergic response and are safe to use on a daily basis.

Rhinocort previously was sold by prescription only. It lasts 24 hours and is non-drowsy. It can be used in patients six years and older. Rhinocort treats both indoor and outdoor allergies, and can be used for the allergy season or all year long.

Common side effects include nose bleeds, sore throat, difficulty breathing, coughing, and irritation of the nose.
